Your website gets visitors. Why aren't they calling?
If you run a clinic, a coaching centre, a salon, or a small export business, you've probably seen the same confusing pattern in your analytics: traffic is fine, but enquiries aren't. People land on the page, scroll a bit, and leave without calling, filling a form, or messaging you. That gap between visits and enquiries is called your conversion rate, and for most small business websites in India, it's quietly leaking customers you already paid (in ads, SEO effort, or word of mouth) to attract.
Here's what's actually going on, based on the data that exists - and what's worth doing about it.
The mobile gap is the real story
Most of your visitors are not on a laptop. In India, Android mobile traffic typically makes up 60-70% of visits to a small business website, according to upGrowth's analysis of conversion data across 50+ Indian startup funnels. But that's also where conversion falls apart: the same analysis puts average conversion on Android mobile at just 1-2%, against 2.5-4% on desktop - roughly two to three times lower.
In plain terms: the majority of the people who find you are on a phone, and the phone experience is where you're losing most of them. If your site was designed and tested mostly on a desktop screen, that mismatch alone could explain a big chunk of your missing enquiries. (Worth noting: upGrowth doesn't publish the exact sample size behind each device figure, so treat these as directional rather than exact - but the direction matches what most small business owners already sense from their own numbers.)
Speed is still the weak link
A joint Google-Accenture "Masters of Mobile" study benchmarked over 100 Indian mobile websites across categories like design, findability, and registration/conversion - and speed was the clear laggard. Indian mobile sites scored 80% on product and page design, 73% on registration and conversion, and 69% on findability, but only 55% on speed, as reported by MediaNama. Everything else about these sites was reasonably good. Speed was the one thing dragging the experience down.
A slow mobile site doesn't just annoy people - it costs you the enquiry before they've even seen your phone number or your pricing. If someone is standing outside your clinic or comparing three salons on their commute, a page that takes several seconds to load is a page they'll abandon for a competitor's that didn't.
People searching near you are already close to buying
This is the part owners underestimate most. Google's own research on local mobile searches - the kind someone does when they type "dentist near me" or "property dealer in [area]" - found that 50% of people who do a local search on their smartphone visit a store within a day, and 18% of those searches lead to a sale within that same day, as cited by Localogy from Google's study. These aren't casual browsers. They've already decided they need what you sell - they're deciding who gets the call.
That means every second of load time, every extra form field, and every missing "Call Now" or WhatsApp button isn't a minor UX flaw. It's the difference between capturing someone who was ready to buy today, and watching them tap back to the search results and call your competitor instead.
What actually moves the needle
None of this requires a website rebuild. Small, specific fixes tend to matter more than a redesign:
- Put a tap-to-call number and a WhatsApp button above the fold on mobile - not buried in a menu
- Cut your enquiry form down to name, phone, and one question; every extra field is a reason to give up
- Test your actual mobile load time on a real phone, on real data speed, not just on office WiFi
- Make sure your address, hours, and services match exactly across your website and Google Business Profile, since local searchers often check both
- Add a visible price range or "starting from" figure if you can - it reduces the hesitation that comes before a call
None of these are exciting. They're also exactly the kind of thing that gets skipped when a website is built once and never revisited.
