WhatsApp Business API Pricing in India: What You Actually Pay in 2026

15 October 20264 min read

Meta moved WhatsApp Business pricing from per-conversation to per-message billing in 2025. Here is what the current India rate card actually means for a small business's monthly bill.

A lot of small business owners sign up for a WhatsApp automation tool, see a pricing page full of terms like "utility conversation" and "marketing template," and just pick a plan and hope. That used to be understandable, because WhatsApp's own billing model changed shape more than once in the last two years. It's worth fifteen minutes to understand what you are actually paying for, because the categories matter more than most people realise.

How WhatsApp charges you now

Until mid-2025, Meta billed WhatsApp Business messages per 24-hour "conversation" - one flat fee covered every message exchanged with a customer in that window, however many you sent. Meta's own developer documentation confirms that this changed: effective July 1, 2025, Meta switched to per-message pricing. You are now charged for each individual template message that gets delivered, not for the conversation window as a whole.

Every template message falls into one of three paid categories:

  • Marketing - promotions, offers, and broadcasts you send to customers
  • Utility - appointment reminders, order updates, delivery notifications
  • Authentication - OTPs and login codes

A fourth category, service messages - the free-form replies your staff type back to a customer - isn't a template at all, and stays free as long as it's sent inside an active customer-service window.

What the India rates actually look like

According to AiSensy, a Meta-authorised WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, the India rate card effective January 1, 2026 is:

  • Marketing: ₹1.09 per delivered message
  • Utility: ₹0.145 per delivered message
  • Authentication: ₹0.145 per delivered message
  • Service (free-form replies in the open window): free

Meta's documentation adds an important detail the flat numbers don't show: utility and authentication rates can drop further through volume tiers - the more charged messages your business sends in a month, the cheaper each one gets. Marketing messages get no such discount, no matter how many you send.

What stays free no matter what

A few things don't get billed at all:

  • Any free-form (non-template) message your team sends inside the 24-hour customer service window that opens when a customer messages you first
  • Utility template messages sent inside that same open window
  • All messages, including templates, sent within 72 hours to someone who messaged you through a "Click to WhatsApp" ad or a Facebook Page button

That last one matters if you run WhatsApp-linked ads - the first three days of that conversation are free, however many messages you exchange.

A rough example

Say a small clinic sends 1,000 appointment reminders a month (utility) and runs one promotional broadcast to 2,000 past patients (marketing). At the base rates above, that's roughly ₹145 for the reminders and ₹2,180 for the broadcast - a reminder costs a fraction of a rupee, while a marketing blast to the same-sized list costs about fifteen times more per message. That gap is the main thing to plan around: reminders, confirmations and order updates are cheap to run at volume; promotional blasts are not, and sending them to a bigger list doesn't make them cheaper per message the way utility messages can get.

The part your WhatsApp tool doesn't advertise

Meta's rate card is what Meta itself charges. Most small businesses don't talk to Meta directly - they go through a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider (a BSP) like the tools used for chatbots, broadcast lists and automated replies. That BSP adds its own subscription or platform fee on top of Meta's per-message rate. The exact markup varies by provider and plan, so it's worth asking any WhatsApp automation vendor for the all-in cost per message, in each category, rather than assuming the quoted "platform fee" is the whole story.

What this means day to day

If you're setting up WhatsApp automation for your business, the practical takeaway is simple: lean on utility messages for anything operational - reminders, confirmations, status updates - since they're cheap and get cheaper with volume. Be more deliberate about marketing broadcasts, since every recipient costs the same regardless of list size, so a cleaner, more engaged list beats a bigger one.
